Sliding/Gliding Cupping
To make a better seal and to allow moving the cups around in a massage technique, a lubricant such massage oil or lotion may be used. One can also use regular cooking oil, such as olive, coconut or almond oil.
When doing gliding cupping, less tension is used in the cups. If the skin is lubricated, the cup should move freely on the skin. Generally, with gliding cupping, we are using a superficial/light or medium pressure on the tissue. Below is an image of cupping on varicose veins. Here, very superficial pressure is applied.
Gliding cupping is most effective to generate and move Qi, and the movement of the cups helps to create heat. It is the most effective treatment to address cold in the body such as Cold Bi, and Qi and Yang Deficiency.
