What is Cupping?
Cupping is a method of treating illness that is caused by local congestion of Qi and Blood. A partial vacuum is created in a cupping jar, which is then applied directly to the skin. The underlying tissue is drawn up into the jar forming an area of blood stasis. This appears to bruise the area, or at least turn it a bright red. The amount of dark red or even purple blood drawn to the surface indicates the degree of stasis. Dark red discolouration demonstrates injury and inflammation with heat. Generally this is the kind of reaction that is considered Bi Syndrome with local Qi Stagnation. If the marks are purple, or even blue, this is a sign of Blood Stasis. In this case, we are often looking at a deeper problem on an internal level. We will get into this in more detail later.
